How to Plan a Wedding in 5 days and Under $500....by Teresa Sheeley
ahemm..yes the secret was my baby girl got married!!!!
This all started with a simple statement..."Mom, Tohny and I would like to get married now, instead of October." "We are thinking of just going somewhere and getting married".....screech...halt, mom steps in now. I CAN'T bear the thought of my baby girl getting married without me not being there...I am selfish that way. But whew, luckily that wasn't really what they wanted to do. They wanted there immediate families with them. So...the plans began.
First steps were to figure out where to get married. And when. So naturally they kidnapped the Priest...
and made him sign in blood that he was available on Friday. (no not really but that was their first step, to see when he would be available.) Step 2: They decided to get married here, on our property, which meant major major clean up and building things.
Kayla had one really important factor to consider..."the dress". We hadn't bought one yet for the October wedding, and being that we live basically in the middle of no-where, it would take several days, to have a dress delivered. Besides dresses are incredibly expensive and were way out of budget right now. So you improvise.
What is a bride to do? You go to the closest fabric store and find a retro 1940's pattern and buy loads of satin. That's what you do. And then you watch your mom scratch her head or possibly started to cry trying to figure out how to follow a pattern...
Look at all that frayed satin on my shirt...rule of thumb, do not ever, ever, ever cut satin with regular scissors, always use pinking sheers; but it still frays. Stay stitch almost everything, and pray a whole lot. "Dear, Lord, make a bird so I can fly far far away....oops no not really. You actually call in the big guns, the grandma who has made every one of her daughter's wedding dresses and bridesmaid dresses, and can teach you things to pass on to your daughter. (ahem, that's if i remember how, and thankfully I only have one daughter!)
**just a side note about the dress** While I was pressing parts of it, I had it draped over the ironing board close to a table, the oh so slick fabric it was naturally and gracefully slid onto my Starbucks drink, which got knocked over and as I dragged the fabric back to the ironing board while pressing I noticed it was brown...what???? heart dropped to the knees, the dress had coffee all over the bodice. I ran sooooo fast to the sink to wash it out, hoping it wouldn't ruin the fabric. Thankfully with the grace of God, it dried and was fine. So please remember to keep your coffee drinks AWAY from your fabric!!! And for just a little sentiment. My mom saved my wedding fabric, which was exactly the same, and 26 years later parts of it was sewn into my daughter's dress.
Another crucial part of a wedding...the cake!
My very talented artist/baker/cook of a daughter, made this most delicious wedding cake. It was layers of chocolate/yellow cake, kept together with a chocolate mousse. Topped with buttercream frosting. And she made the anemone flowers out of sugar paste. They were beautiful.
She also found a vintage cake topper that was perfect for her and Tohny.
Not bad for the first try and making a wedding cake is it? I am proud. :) She also made mini cheesecakes. I made beef brisket, barbecue meatballs, and chicken drummettes. The in-laws brought the side dishes.
Hey, in this family we love to eat! Foods one of the most important ingredients to any function we do. :)
The homemade bouquet was ready to go.
The rings were in place.
The bride was almost ready.
The smiles were in place.
And all that is left is .....love.
Thank you so much to all our family for helping us. Mom, Janet, Rhonda, Tasha, sorry Eddie didn't get to sing, thank you to Father Jake for being so helpful. (He married Dave and I almost 26 years ago), thank you to Tohny's parents and grandparents for being the photographers! And to Matt and Chris, the brothers of the bride & groom. And thanks to God for making such a beautiful special day, that when the prayers were being said for Kayla & Tohny that the earth was still and quiet except for the sound of the beautiful birds singing. It was Your music they played at their wedding. What more could you ask for.
The bride & groom are now on a mini honeymoon at the Oregon coast; camping out at the ocean, because they do not have enough money for a hotel room...ahhh love.
